Summer breeze – oh Seals and Crofts had it sooo right – makes me feel fine. Finally a cool breeze to ruffle those loose curls on the back of my neck! I'm on on my annual pilgrimage to the East Coast, catching up with old friends and sampling the seasonal bounty that the Northeast has to offer. Up here in the North Country they usually manage to stay pretty cool, but the last week was hot, hot, and hot. You know the weather I’m talking about; hot, hazy and humid – that kind of oppression that makes even us Forever Cool types wilt. So when my friend The Farmer suggested a foray further north, into the (hopefully) cooler mountains and forests, I readily agreed. It seems she had heard about a goat farm that was making some bodacious cheeses and as she is also thinking about adding some goats to her kingdom wanted to visit the farm. So we took the soft top off the Jeep, filled our Nalgene water bottles, and headed north on I87, more affe...

Eek. Swoon.
Let me repeat that. Eek. Swoon.
That's how I feel right now! Have any of you Middle Sisters ever been swept off of your feet? The rush of excitement, butterflies in the tummy, random hot flashes while you think about someone... it's all happening to me at this very moment :-)
One of my favorite things to do while I unwind and relax is to do crossword puzzles in bed while I drinking my Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a random single-girl behavior that I love. I'm sure all of you have something similar? Haha, maybe not... Anywayyyy, a few nights ago, I'm engaging in my fav single-girl behavior when my cell rings. It is Irish Hottie... Eek! Swoon!
It was pretty late so I was hoping this wasn't going to be a 'booty call' (you've got the wrong Mischief Maker my dude). But he just called to chat and see how my day was. To chat and see how my day was? Whaaaaaat? Isn't he just the sweetest!?

But you need to go!
O-My-G. Monhegan Island is so freakin' pretty, its outrageous. Especially when you're there with a boy :-)
His name is Irish Hottie and he is blowing wind into my sailboat right now. He is the one I met in the bar last week... the one who offered to pick up the tab for all of my friends and I. So chivalrous! Anyway, so I didn't have any real plans for the 4th of July (the water slide party in New Jersey was most def the back-up plan) and Irish Hottie starts talking about this Island he used to go to as a child. It sounded effing perfect!
So last minute we hop in his car and drive the 8 hours to Maine. Best. Decision. Ever.
We drive to Boothbar Harbor, Maine, catch a ferry over to Monhegan Island and this is the first thing I see:
LIke what? Seriously? Um... yeahhhhhh... I might not make it back to NYC. We spend our days hiking around the Island, our afternoons lounging in the hammock outside of our little cottage and our nights cooking dinner and drin...

Like really hot.
Is there a national heat wave or something? Jimminy Christmas it's boiling outside. And it's not just hot, its HUMID. What a terrible combination. For those of you who are foreigners to NYC heat, its downright awful. These tall buildings might look pretty at night when they're all lit up and fancy looking, but the truth is, they allow no air to flow through the city. It's like an oven! Ugh and yuck.
If you are like me and need to cool down this summer, I've picked a few of my favorite go-to items for when it's utterly unbearable outside. These light-weight fabrics keep you cool when you feel like you want to melt. Here are a few from one of my favorite designers, Max Azria for BCBG:

So light and airy, this BCBG Silk Drawstring Dress will be super comfy whether you are walking around the city or lounging poolside. Soccer? Such a weird sport where officials have the power to disallow goals with no challenges which is effing ridiculous in this day and age with instant replay and hot tempers. Ok, maybe you weren't thinking exactly that... maybe more along the lines of, Mischief Maker, why are you posting about the World Cup? Wine and sports do not even go together.
On the contrary Middle Sisters, on the contrary. First of all, wine can go with anything and everything :-) Second, how often in history has our entire nation been cheering on our country as we battle it out on a world stage? Yes, there are the Olympics, but that is more of an individual support for talented athletes.
I'm talking about chanting "USA" in the streets and uniting under one goal of World Cup domination. I don't know about you, but I'm not usually the American flag bandana wearing type of American. Break out that nail file and get ready to embrace this Summer's most exciting accessory. Nail color! A very subtle, yet suprisingly sexy way to express yourself in this glamorous world of fashion is to paint pretty colors on your nails. A clean manicure paired with the right nailpolish color can bring added attention to detail that spice up any outfit.
Take for example my last blog post. It was anchored with a modern spin on nautical chic-ness, pairing stripes with bold accessories and beach inspired wedges. Now, just imagine how a perfect nail color could make one of those outfits pop. Take a navy blue and white striped flowy top over dark blue skinny jeans with a long gold chain sporting an anchor pendant and add this color to your nails:
How classy is this color? Really Red by Essie is my absolute fav this summer. I've received so many compliments on this color choice and you can too for just $8! That my darlings, is the cheapest accessory I own and I'm L-O-...

Well, its over. Cupcake Kid and I are through. And do you want to know the worst part? I can't even look at cupcakes the same way again. Me? Mischief Maker with a secret sugar addiction? No more cupcakes!? Aaarrrgggggggh.
So I'm out with the girls right? And we're at a dope little spot called 11th Street Bar. We're sitting at a table across from the bar and everything is fine and fun and dandy. We're laughing and drinking wine and reminiscing and gossiping about boys. Then, out of nowhere, Cupcake Kid walks in. With. A. Girl. And this was not an innocent hey-I'm-just-hanging-out-with-a-really-good-friend-of-mine-who-also-happens-to-be-a-girl entrance. This was, hand on the small of the back, opening the door for her, entrance. Not. Cool.

Stripes, anchors, and conches... Oh My!
Ahoy my beautiful Middle Sisters! What is with the ocean and ship theme!? I'm so glad you asked :-) My new favorite t-shirts and accessories for the summer are anything nautical. And with these, you can go wild! You can layer necklaces, wear huge earrings and pile on the bracelets. I know, I know, it might counter a few other pointers I have given you, but it is the summer... go crazy! Ok, below are my must haves:
Striped Tee's
Do not be afraid of wearing t-shirts with horizontal stripes! LIke much fashion heresay, the myth that horizontal stripes make you look bigger is incorrect. When worn in the right size, shape, and fit for your body, the style can be very flattering. Here are my picks from www.shopbop.com

Nautical Necklaces
Throw on layers of these necklaces over any of these striped tee's to sail up your look! And as usual, mix up the golds and silvers. Trust me, it will look ah-mazing. Here are a few from www.aldoshoes.com

And truth be told: I like dates.
Who knew!? This Mischief Maker is a date liker. I always thought I was more of a 'Hey, let's get a quick drink' or 'How about brunch?' or even 'Early movie?'. All in order to avoid the obvious dating scene that happens to be my life. Here is the reason: if we're not on a date, then we're not dating, which means that I'm a perfectly happy, perpetually single Middle Sister. So far, it has been a fool proof system and I have done very well for myself in this non-dating realm.
But Cupcake Kid... I am feeling Cupcake Kid. So, I say again... who knew!? Shall we cruise through the evening? Grab a drink Middle Sisters, lets cozy up and chat.
Dinner: we go to Counter (a hip East Village restaurant with a casual/chic vibe, perfect!) and just my luck, it is a BYOB. Yep, that's right. I love BYOB restaurants. So obviously I uncork a bottle of my Cabernet Sauvignon and he loves it. And right then... I knew it was going to be a good night.

A few sequins never hurt anybody.
This season's girls-night-out fashion tip: sequins! And I already know what you are thinking... Ahhhh! Sequins conjure images of bad 80's fashion and shoulder padded blazers and white-washed denim and skirts with leggings (that never came back by the way, their brief return in 2005 was unwarranted and unnecessary). But there is a new dawn of glitz upon us and if done with a fashionably forward and thoughtful approach, we just might have ourselves a shiny keeper.
Let's start small and work our way up the sequin ladder. If you need to test the waters before completely diving in to this sequin phenomenon, start with the accessories:
Like this Steve Madden Black Sequin Tote - it has just enough glitz without falling overboard.

Or these bracelets and earrings from Juicy Couture - add these to any outfit for instant glamour.

Now that your toes are little wet, lets dive in!

Yeah, that's right: cupcakes, whenever I want them! I mean, I always knew boys were easy to manipulate into submission, but c'mon, don't make it this easy for me. Play some games, intrigue me, maybe a little cat and mouse to whet my appetite, and give me a chase! If you show your hand this early, you will never have the power in the relationship. This is Relationship 101 my dudes, pay attention. Let me start from the beginning...
So, there's this boy (haha, isn't that how all of my posts start?) and his name is Cupcake Kid. He's a buyer for some menswear boutique in SoHo. I met him at a typically boring Upper East Side apartment overlooking the Manhattan skyline party. He's cute, in that indie-rocker, super hip, I-live-in-the-dopest-neighborhood-ever sort of way. Ok ladies, it is that time of the year. The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, day dresses are making a fierce comeback and Sex and the City 2 is about to hit theaters. Is it a cultural revolution? Yes. SATC garners love for issues from gender equality to female sexuality to women empowerment to fabulous friendships. Is it a fashion revolution? Yes. Umm... have you seen the show? Those outfits are to die for and who else but Carrie Bradshaw made Manolo Blahnik a household name? Is it also an entertainment revolution? Yes. This show debuted in 1998 and was an instant success due to its sexually relatable dialogue, charismatic characters and fashionista points of view.
Look at these women, rocking classic Little Black Dresses (my favorite), and standing so proud. They are not running from fashion or their sexuality. They are embracing it full on and I heart them!

DOPE CORNBREAD (meaning really good, not made with illegal ingredients)

WOW was Costa Rica amazing. It almost feels likes a dream... Good thing I took lots of pictures of my adventures with Julien. Ahhhhh Julien. We ziplined through the Monteverde Cloud Forest, we spotted monkeys and sloths in the Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, we surfed at sunset in Montezuma, we swung in hammocks (I even brought one back with me although it has yet to find a home in my apartment), we drank wine, we did... other stuff. It. Was. Glorious. And all along I'm thinking, is this real?? Well, it certainly got real.
We were zipping through the rain forest on a canopy tour and everything seemed to work out perfectly.
And they understand your plight!
The fashion industry can sometimes come off as trite, obnoxious and overly self-confident... but, I mean let's be honest, who doesn't at times? We all need to be a little selfish. Otherwise, how would we ever accomplish anything!? And if anyone tells you its not OK to think of yourself ahead of others sometimes, I give you permission to throw a drink in their face. Preferably not my Pinot, but if the situation calls for it... anyway, I digress, I digress.
The point is, many fashion designers are starting to think of the consumer's wallet and not just our impeccable fashion sense. Below are three designers who have created fashion lines exclusively for the money-conscious buyer. Ahhhhh, its refreshing to know that great style and chic self expression can always be affordable :-)

Yo. I would seriously like to ammend this definition. How about: whirl-wind: noun, a tumultuous, confused rush of awesomeness. So my story begins... I met this guy...
And it was perfect. Like wake up on the right side of the bed, find $5 on the street, hear your favorite song at the super-hip indie bar downtown and immediately begin dancing... it was that perfect. I know what you're thinking: really? again? another perfect dude? YES!
His name is Julien. He's a brooding artist. That's pretty much all you need to know about him. I met him last summer and he swept me up in his whirl-wind with serious precision. Tumbling, stumbling, fumbling around the city with Julien is like curling up with my favorite bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and riding Dorothy's tornado swept house to a far-away land. Yeah...
So anyway, he asked me to go away with him for a weekend... eek :-) We're going to Costa Rica! I'm sorry... did you say Costa R...

Hey Dudes. Erin Go Bragh!

Legend has it that ol' St. Patty boy drove the snakes out of Ireland with his magic pipe. Thus!, folks all over this nation and the next choose to celebrate this ancient happening by taking back a few (or more) pints, wherever they can find one. But you know, to me, this does not sound like something to get inebriated about. Big whoop! I'd drive everyone off my block if they heard me playing the pipe, too. That's why I failed Recorder in 3rd grade.

So, instead of celebrating this holiday, I celebrated Monday's holiday: the Ides of March! In ancient Roman history, the Ides of March is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was murdered by the Roman Senate. Now, that is one WICKED reason to celebrate! And plus, for this holiday it is of the utmost appropriateness to consume our very favorite of all beverages in honor of Roman culture. Vino.

Because my Pinot Drinking lovelies. Because you must always be ahead of the fashion curve. Because you must spring ahead. I was on an exceptional date this past weekend with a dude who looked just like Clive Owen, so I thus dubbed him 'Clive Owen kid.' Oh middle sisters, how I have neglected you so. Many apologies my Pinot darlings! But if you only knew how exhasuted I've been from moving this past weekend, you would completely understand my lack of posts. It has been terrible! First, my movers canceled and I had to scrounge up people last minute from CraigsList to assist me in my move downtown. That's right ladies, this Drama Queen is no longer an Upper East Sider-but I always will be in my heart :-). I am now a resident of the super hip East Village, where style, fashion, and art meet in a beautifully fabulous triangle of all things chic.
With this move came many complications. I mean, how hard is it to walk an antique, cherrywood armoir up 6 flights of stairs? Stop complaining movers, at least the stairs were short.
Friends, loved ones, and Vancouverans alike,

Now... THAT was a show. The show I speak of is the closing ceremony at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, both, or call my mother and ask her to tuck me into bed. Because, somehow I reverted mentally 20 years. I'm not exactly sure what they were thinking. Regardless, it certainly was Canadian, wasn't it!?

Let me note, I thought my humor was self-depracating. But, I can sincerely say that this ceremony outdid anything I'm capable of! Impressive! This mime pulled the fourth cauldron up in the center of the arena when it failed to rise on its own, in parody of the technical failure in the opening ceremony. What a tactful way to recover! And I loved the exploitation of Canadian stereotypes. Come on! Beaver and moose heads? Thank you! Giant maple leaf dancers? Love it. Lumberjacks? Have we gone too far yet?

Greetings Middle Sisters,

You know, there are a ton of great things about piercings. They can totally change your image. A hoop in your nose can make you look like a punk or a hip chick in the best way. A pair of pearls clasped to your ears makes dull pastels (the snooty oldest sister's usual choice for family functions, how boring!) seem clean-cut, classy, and astonishingly presentable. A little hole in your belly can bring you back 10 years, and a "Monroe" piercing on your upper lip can bring you all the way back to the 50's!

Anyway, I've had my fair share of fun with piercings. For a short while I had a nose ring, which my parents HATED, by the way. (I loved it, probably for that reason.) Unfortunately, I had to remove it from my face. The deal was, I was seeing this guy who was a great smoocher! So, of course, we snogged a whole bunch. That was wonderful! But, here lies the problem. First, this country robbed poor Europe of the title of their football, or what we call 'soccer', which is obviously a more civilized, humane sport (with much better looking players. Noted...). Only Americans call it 'soccer' owing to our vast ignorance of what goes on outside our national boundaries.
Second, American football is really just a misnomer/watered-down version of rugby with all the danger and most of the skill removed. Way to go, USA! Yet another idea stolen from Europe, as well! Do we see a trend here?
Third, the sport adds to the growth of hyper-masculinity in this country. What I would like to see is some intelligent women thrown on that field with the same rules. I could only imagine how different, how much more culturally sophisticated the outcome would be! I say we give it a go.

Each Tuesday, Barbes Bar in Park Slope, Brooklyn hosts Slavic Soul Party. It's an ensemble comprised of American jazz musicians playing Eastern European Balkan-soul-gypsy-funk (probably the most common genre in America... San Francisco Weekly raves, "The group's residency at Barbes - a small seminal nightclub in Brooklyn - has become a gathering for international musicians and the nexus of East Coast gypsy punk, not because SSP! is comprised of scenesters, but because the band is undeniably world class."

Ok Middle Sisters, this Drama Queen is giving you the absolutely fabulous inside scoop to this season's best accessories: snow whites.
Forget about those dated fashion faux pas regarding white after labor day or memorial day or whatever day it is. Think about it! White is the best neutral, it goes with every color! Pair it with black or navy blue for a super chic, timelessly classic look; combo it with skin tones of light pinks, beiges, and nudes for an updated urban glamwear ensamble, match it with bold brights like grassy greens, sunny yellows, or firey oranges to offset the greys of winter and look forward to spring!

Hello wine lovers! Did you miss me :-) I apologize for the lack of posts, but it was the holidays and I was so busy with charity events and fundraisers and volunteering (yes, I aboslutely volunteer, especially over the holidays)! And it felt so great to be home. Yes, it is true, this Drama Queen might be going a little soft on you. But do not get used to it, it is only for one post.

My favorite event over the holidays was not at a fabulous red carpet gala posing as a fundraiser, it was making snow angels and building snow men with my 3 and 7 year old cousins, Connor and Kristen. They are quite possibly the cutest kids known to man (I know, everyone says that, but seriously, they are). We played in the falling snow with their dog George, we excitedly tossed snowballs at each other and we capped off the winter wonderful day with hot cocoa (my mother's special recipe). I swear, it should have been...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Let's face it. We all overdo it once in a while. Here's my simple but effective hangover remedy:

            8 oz. Club Soda
            5 dashes of Bitters
3 dashes of Tabasco or Hot Sauce

Some people think the reason it works is because it tastes so narsty that you forget you have a hangover.

Have you got a good hangover remedy? Post it here!

            Cheers, Rebel Red

3.SiP (the best part)

Most people tense up when they get to this part. Relax, there are no wrong answers. Think about it, when you are talking about flavors in the foods you eat, do you get nervous and tense? Of course not…so start sipping.

Try taking a small sip, hold it in your mouth for a moment, and before you swallow or spit, take in some air through your mouth. This enhances the aroma and the flavors. How does the wine “feel” in your mouth? Think of milk…when you drink skim milk – it feels “light” in your mouth. Now, think of whole milk. It feels heavy in your mouth – right?

Now, you can move onto what you actually taste. Remember most of what you taste in wine (or food, for that matter) comes from your sense of smell. So expect to taste similar flavors as the aromas you sniffed earlier. However, most people can pick out more nuances in ...

Darlings, you might not want to hear this, so pour yourself a glass of my deilicous Pinot Grigio and listen up: it is time to clear out your closets. Yes, yes, yes, it will be time consuming and I know that many tears will be shed over the loss of a few coveted items. However, you know very well that the sweater Aunt Agnes gave you for your birthday two years ago is absolutely never going to see the light of day. What you do not know is that somewhere in this world, someone will absolutely love that sweater. How dare you deprive someone of their joy! Here is what you do:

1. Put on some cheery, upbeat music (we're going to need it to get through the losses we're about to endure).

Too much wine? Eh, maybe...
Hello my wine loving darlings! I am here with sage Drama Queen advice: never, under any circumstances, should you ask your boyfriend about an ex-girlfriend after 4 glasses of Pinot Grigio...no matter how delicious my wine is. One would think certain topics might fall under the 'common knowledge' brain category; however, under certain function-altering-substances, some topics might slip into the 'perfectly acceptable to talk about' category. And that is where circumstances can get uncomfortably awkward.
My fabulous friends and I were celebrating our girl's birthday at the 6th Ward (a super fun Lower East Side spot), when a friend of my boyfriend accidentally let slip a story regarding his ex. The thing is, I was not aware of this particular ex who 1) works at his law firm 2) is best friends with his best friend's girfriend and 3) I have had to hang out with before at both work and friendly gatherings. It bothered me that he had fail...

Dearest readers,

Ah, what wine to serve up at those joyous holiday gatherings? Where people get together and peel potatoes and watch hours upon hours of football and then share a glorious meal. Later on, some have meltdowns. If you’re a three-year-old, we understand. But everybody else just needs to relax and have a nice glass of wine.
Thanksgiving is one of the more challenging meals to pair with wine. That’s because there are just so darn many flavors going on. Savory and salty tastes are not the issue; salty foods actually make wines taste softer and smoother. But sweeter tastes, like cranberries, sweet potatoes, and chocolate-covered green beans can make some wines taste bitter.
Luckily, we can offer you several excellent Middle Sister solutions. Any of us girls would be perfect gracing your holiday table, because our wines are made to for easy and effortless drinking in general. But if you’re in the...

2. SwiRl aNd SniFf

Your senses of smell and taste are closely intertwined, so take the time to sniff a glass of wine. Swirling the wine in your glass opens up the wine (that’s wine speak for letting in air) and helps you take in the aromas. Place your glass on a flat surface and swirl the wine. Then quick - put your nose inside the glass and give it a good sniff. What is the first aroma that comes to mind? Is it a fruity or woody scent? Wines that are oak aged sometimes smell more like spices and wood than fruits; so don’t limit your thinking to raspberries or blackberries. You could also smell cinnamon, cloves or vanilla due to the oak aging. Some wines even have vegetal scents like grass or green peppers.

Grapes, like other fruits, have unique characteristics depending on the type (varietal). Think of apples – there are hundreds of different apple varieties, each with a unique flavor and aroma. Grapes are no dif...

As one of my FB friends said (I wish I could remember who!), “Hold your glass up to the light for maximum pomposity.” Actually, you can hold it against something white like a sheet of paper or napkin and you’ll be able to see the color of the wine more clearly. Is it reddish, reddish brown or more purple in color? Is the wine dark or light in color – can you see through the wine? Depth of color is a general indicator of whether a wine is a fuller bodied or lighter bodied wine. Is the wine cloudy and/or brownish – usually not a good sign – the wine could be oxidized. Epic wine fail. In a nutshell, too much air, for too long has come in contact with the wine causing a color, aroma and taste change. Blech.

My first word as a tiny little girl was “Cookie,” and the word that followed shortly was “Pocketbook” – if that gives you any idea of the person I’ve grown up to be! I recently came upon a book by George Lipton (Yes, the ever-mocked host of Inside The Actor’s Studio). He’s a pretty smart dude, and apparently he is a word-geek too!
Last week, the Wine Sisterhood sent a few cases of Drama Queen Pinot Grigio and Wicked White to the Broad Summit last weekend in Guerneville, CA.
The Broad Summit was a retreat for a small group of internet ladies. They were invited to relax, enjoy and be pampered a little.
Friend of Middle Sister, Leslie Sbrocco, led Saturday morning’s wine education (also courtesy of Wine Sisterhood).
From the Bay Area? You may know her from PBS’s show “Check Please.” If not, you may know her from her many wine books.

The first wine we tasted was the Middle Sister Pinot Grigio – used to show aroma and clarity in a white wine.
The most impressive fact I learned was that ripe Pinot Gris grapes are colored bluish grey to light pinkish brown. They’re not the green grapes I thought they were made of. See? Learning and drinking.
Virtuous, virtuous learning.
It was an amazingly relaxing weekend and both sisters felt refreshed upon their return. ...

So over the past few weeks I've been quite the traveling gal. That's right ladies, Middle Sister wines went on the road.

First stop was the Windy City for the Chicago Gourmet - A Celebration of Food & Wine. A two day event in Millennium Park showcasing the city's rich culinary heritage. There was food, there was wine, there were chef's running around in their white chef coats. I was even lucky enough to stand next to Fabio Viviani of Top Chef Season 5 fame. And I must say, he is even more delicious in person!

A definite trip highlight was doing lunch at Hot Doug's (Sausage Superstore and Encased Meats Emporium). I've wanted to check this place out since it was featured on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations show on the Travel Channel. Hot Doug's is dedicated to the art of "haute" dogs, a recent obsession of mine! And true to form I ordered the Fois Dog...a fois gras and sauterne...

Hello, hello, hello my Pinot darlings! Did you miss me? Of course you did, but do not worry because there are plenty of stories to satiate your drama hunger! Let’s begin...

So, I was at a concert last weekend on Governor’s Island, one of my cutie patootie boy interests was performing :-), and everything started out spectacular! I, of course, brought a bottle of my Drama Queen Pinot Grigio to share with everyone backstage and we were having such a fun time until 3 events occurred in rapid succession, leading to a serious fun sponge-ing of the night:

            1. It started raining. On Governor’s Island. An outdoor venue. And my new Marc Jacobs, Peep Toe Suede Booties (tell me these aren't super cute!?) did not fare well against mother nature… lets just say suede and rain do not play well together :-(

            2. After running to a tent to nurse my wounded booties, I realized 2 things: a) m...
